Shine On: How To Keep Women’s Golf Shoes Clean

With the seasons changing, your favourite pair of women’s golf shoes is probably working a little harder right now to get you through the fairway, rough and bunker in varying weather conditions.

Even though women’s golf footwear is designed to conquer the elements, a little care will help to prolong the life of your favourite pair (or any pair) of golf shoes.

Just a couple of simple steps can already make a difference. Here are some essential tips on how to keep your women’s golf shoes clean and have them perform optimally:

1. Regular Golf Shoe Cleaning Routine

Establishing a regular cleaning routine is the foundation of keeping your golf shoes in top condition.

The Materials You Need:

  • Soft brush or cloth

  • Mild soap or specialized shoe cleaner

  • Warm water

  • Old toothbrush

  • Towel

  • Newspaper or shoe tree

Apply the following Steps:

  1. Remove Excess Dirt: After each round, use a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt and grass clippings from your shoes.

  2. Clean the Uppers: Mix a small amount of mild soap with warm water. Dishwashing liquid works quite well too. Dip the soft brush or cloth into the soapy water and gently scrub the upper part of the shoes.

  3. Scrub the Soles: Use an old toothbrush to scrub the soles, focusing on the grooves where dirt tends to accumulate.

  4. Rinse and Dry: Wipe off the soap with a damp cloth and let the shoes air dry. Stuffing the shoes with newspaper or using a shoe tree can help maintain their shape and absorb excess moisture.

Women’s golf shoe manufacturers do offer Golf Shoe Cleaning Kits as well. Here are 3 options from brands whom specialize in golf shoes amongst other things:

2. Golf Shoe Deep Cleaning

For a more thorough clean, especially after muddy or rainy rounds, an in-depth cleaning might be necessary.

Apply the following Steps:

  1. Remove Laces and Insoles: Take out the laces and insoles. These can be washed separately with soap and water.

  2. Clean the Shoes: Follow the regular cleaning steps with extra attention to areas with stubborn dirt.

  3. Deodorize: Sprinkle baking soda inside the shoes to absorb any odors. Leave it overnight and shake it out the next day.

  4. Dry the Shoes: Leave overnight in a place without direct sunlight or strong heat in general. It usually helps to avoid deformation of the shoe.

  5. Reassemble: Once everything is completely dry, put the laces and insoles back.

  6. Cleaning golf shoes in the washing machine: Although not recommended by manufacturers, I have used the washing machine many times. Here is how:

Put non-leather golf shoes into a garment bag and place them into the washing machine. Before doing so, remove the shoe laces and place them into the garment bag too.

Add a very small amount of washing liquid or powder or non at all, as washing machines usually have residual washing liquid in their system. Please do not use softener as it is more likely to attack the non-fabric parts of your golf shoes, if used often.

When you are about to start the washer, make sure it is a cold wash short cycle at 30°C or 85°F. Add beach towels or something similar into the machine to avoid loud tumbling in the drum. Once done, they come out nice and clean, inside and out.

3. Maintenance Tips for Golf Shoes

For pro-longed wear and a clean looking golf shoe, these general pointers might also help.

  • Waterproofing: Regularly apply a waterproofing spray to protect your shoes from moisture. This is especially important for leather shoes.

  • Storage: Store your golf shoes in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving them in the trunk of your car where heat and humidity can cause damage.

  • Rotation: If you play frequently, consider rotating between two pairs of golf shoes. This allows each pair to dry out and reduces wear and tear.

4. Golf Shoe Stain Removal

Special attention might have to be given to particular areas. Here’s how to deal with common types:

Grass Stains:

  • Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Apply it to the stain with a cloth, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Mud Stains:

  • Allow mud to dry completely before attempting to clean. Brush off the dried mud and follow the regular cleaning steps.

Water Stains:

  • Dampen the stained area and surrounding regions lightly, then allow the shoes to dry naturally. This can help blend the water-stained area with the rest of the shoe.

5. Material-Specific Care for Women’s Golf Shoe’s

Different materials require different care techniques:

Leather Shoes:

  • Use a leather cleaner and protector regularly to keep the leather soft and supple. Apply a neutral shoe polish thereafter.

Synthetic Shoes:

  • These are generally easier to care for and can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Avoid excessive heat which can warp the material.

Mesh Shoes:

  • Be gentle with mesh material. Use a soft brush and mild soap to avoid damaging the delicate fabric.
