Planning my first golf trip was exciting.
I pictured beautiful fairways, great weather, and unforgettable rounds with friends. What I didn’t realize was that a golf trip is very different from a regular Saturday morning at my home course.
.

.
There were plenty of little things I hadn’t thought about. Some made the trip easier. Others I only learned the hard way.
If you’re planning your first golf getaway, here are the things I wish someone had told me before I packed my golf bag.
.
If you’re planning your first golf trip, here’s what you’ll learn:
- What to pack (and what you can leave at home)
- Why comfortable golf shoes matter more than you think
- How to prepare for changing weather
- Simple ways to stay comfortable during multiple rounds
- Why some of the best memories happen away from the golf course

A Golf Trip Isn’t Just Golf
This might sound obvious, but I honestly expected a golf trip to be all about playing golf.
In reality, it’s much more than that.
You’ll spend time traveling, checking into your hotel or resort, relaxing after your round, enjoying meals together, and maybe even exploring the local area.
Depending on your destination, you might spend as much time by the pool, at the clubhouse, or sightseeing as you do on the course.
That’s why it’s worth planning for the whole experience, not just your tee times.

I Packed Too Much Golf Clothing
If you’re anything like me, planning the outfits is part of the fun.
For my first golf trip, I packed as though I needed a different golf outfit for every possible occasion.
I didn’t.
Looking back, I would have packed fewer golf clothes and more comfortable everyday outfits.
A couple of versatile golf outfits that you can mix and match are usually enough for a long weekend. Then leave room for casual clothes you’ll actually wear in the evenings or while relaxing around the resort.
Don’t forget a lightweight sweater or jacket either.
Even warm destinations can have surprisingly cool mornings or breezy evenings.

Comfortable Golf Shoes Are Worth Their Weight in Gold
If there’s one thing I’d never compromise on again, it’s comfortable golf shoes.
Playing one round in slightly uncomfortable shoes is manageable.
Playing three or four rounds over several days is a completely different story.
Before your trip, make sure your shoes are properly broken in. Your feet will thank you.
I also recommend packing extra socks.
Fresh, dry socks can make a bigger difference than most golfers expect, especially on warm days.
And if you’re prone to blisters, throw a few blister plasters into your golf bag. Hopefully you won’t need them, but you’ll be glad they’re there if you do.
.
.
Be Ready for Every Kind of Weather
Weather can change quickly, even during the same day.
One morning might start cool enough for a pullover, while the afternoon has you reaching for sunscreen and extra water.
If you’re heading to a coastal course, wind can become part of the challenge too.
A small amount of preparation goes a long way.
I always make sure I have:
- A hat or visor
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- A lightweight rain jacket
- An extra golf glove
- Plenty of water
It’s much easier to enjoy your round when you’re comfortable, whatever the weather decides to do.

Don’t Stress About Taking Your Clubs
Before my first golf trip, I assumed I had to bring my own clubs.
Now I know that’s not always true.
If you’re flying, renting clubs can sometimes be the easier and more affordable option.
Many golf resorts offer high-quality rental sets for women that are perfectly suitable for a holiday round.
Of course, if you’re attached to your own clubs or playing a bucket-list course, bringing them might be worth it.
But don’t feel like it’s your only option.
Sometimes traveling lighter makes the whole journey more enjoyable.
.
.
Pace Yourself
One thing I didn’t expect was how tiring a golf trip could be, even with just one round a day.
Travel, early tee times, walking the course, warm weather, and busy evenings all add up. By the second or third day, you might find yourself feeling more tired than you expected.
The good news is that it’s easy to avoid.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Pack a few snacks to keep your energy up during the round.
Take a few minutes to stretch before you tee off.
And don’t feel like you have to fill every spare moment with activities. It’s perfectly okay to spend an hour by the pool, enjoy a leisurely lunch, or simply sit on the clubhouse terrace and soak up the views.
A golf trip isn’t about squeezing as much as possible into every day. It’s about enjoying the experience at a pace that leaves you feeling refreshed, not exhausted.

Some of the Best Moments Happen Off the Course
The golf is obviously a big reason for the trip.
But it’s often the moments between rounds that stay with you.
Laughing over dinner.
Watching the sunset from the clubhouse terrace.
Sharing stories about the day’s best shots, and the ones you’d rather forget.
Exploring a new town.
Taking photos with friends.
Relaxing with a glass of bubbly after a great day on the course.
Those memories become just as important as the scorecard.
So don’t feel like every minute has to revolve around golf.
Leave a little room for simply enjoying where you are.
.
.
Book Earlier Than You Think
One lesson I learned quickly is that the best tee times don’t stay available for long.
If you’re traveling during peak season, popular courses can fill up weeks or even months in advance.
Booking early gives you more choice.
It also makes planning the rest of your trip much easier.
Once your tee times are confirmed, everything else tends to fall into place.

Forget the Score and Enjoy the Experience
It’s easy to put pressure on yourself.
After all, you’ve traveled to play beautiful courses you’ve been looking forward to for months.
But here’s the truth.
Nobody remembers every score.
They remember the incredible views.
The great conversations.
The unexpected wildlife on the course.
The laughs after an impossible bunker shot.
And the feeling of spending time with people who love golf just as much as you do.
If you play well, that’s a bonus.
If you don’t, you’re still on a golf trip.
That’s a pretty good place to be.
